Hi, I’m Teri - and thanks for checking out my profile!
I’ve just returned to my native country Denmark after living 18 years abroad, mainly in Scotland.
I’m a psychologist*, counsellor and coach and working with me means working in an integrative way where I pull on all of these methods, while also tailoring a session after your needs and wants as much as I can.
I found out I was autistic when I was 35. My first client in my private practice was autistic and I thought I’d better go and study this ‘weird’ condition I’d heard lots of bad things about but yet hadn’t been taught anything about during my psychology degree and hadn’t been told how to work with during my 3 years of studying counselling!
And what I discovered was all the answers to all the bits of myself I hadn’t been able to make sense of my whole life until that point – turns out autism isn’t weird or bad but a highly misunderstood different way of seeing and experiencing the world.
I went on to do a Masters in psychology focussing on autism with my dissertation being on the consequences of a late diagnosis for women (though, with the work I’ve done with Thriving Autistic, it’s clear that the results often apply to anyone who falls under the ‘high masking’ category, regardless of gender identity.)
Working with me means we’ll be meeting over Zoom for 60 minutes.
I offer ad hoc sessions (€115) as well as a 6-session package (€599) and we can work together weekly, fortnightly, monthly or on an ‘as and when’ basis, with availability on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10 am and 5 pm GMT.
To ensure agency, equality and empowerment in our sessions, I’ll be looking for you to bring something you want to talk about – something you want to explore (past, present or future) or a goal/outcome you want to work towards or something you want to talk through that’s causing you distress, concern or dissatisfaction in life.
We’ll have a reflective conversation where I’ll ask you questions for you to get to know yourself better and increase your self-awareness.
We’ll become detectives together, delving into what you don’t understand about yourself or this world and the people in it and how to live a life that suits you better and lead to greater satisfaction.
It's important to note that I don’t sit with all the answers, or indeed, any of the answers because as Dr Stephen Shore points out: If you’ve met one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person. And as a wonderfully unique person, I do not have the answers for how to live your life in a way that feels right to you but this is something we can figure out together.
Sessions with me won’t be pure counselling or coaching. It’ll be a holistic approach, combining all my knowledge and experience and will include sharing information around the brain and how humans operate for you to gain more insight into the complexities of the mind.
I’ll be working using my own method that I call the Triple-A Model to help you grow in your Awareness (because without awareness we can’t move forward), Acceptance (as without acceptance there can be no growth) and Action (because at the end of the day words cannot change us, only taking action can but we must first gain awareness of what we want to change and use acceptance to get there).
*Please note that though I hold a BSc and MSc in psychology, I’m not a clinical psychologist and do not work with diagnoses, nor am I a trauma specialist, so if you’re wanting to work with any issues around PTSD or complex trauma, I’m unfortunately not a good match for you but there are other such options via Thriving Autistic’s practitioner page.
If I sound like your kind of person, get in touch and we’ll set up a 20-minute free chat to see if we’re the right fit as it’s incredibly important that you feel safe and comfortable in my company.
