Mentoring & Coaching with Marina
Meet Marina King
Hey, I am Marina.
Originally from Zimbabwe and Cape Town, I have lived in the UK since 1987. It took a decade to process immigrating and then another decade to really settle and to be able to go to university in my early thirties. That said, I only received my British nationality 10 years ago, so I think that decades are my ideal processing time!
Talking about processing times, I am a bottom-up processor, which means that I take in a great deal of information and details to then build up a bigger picture. Processing all this information also takes quite a bit of time. When I was a child, taking this time earned me a label as a ‘slow learner’, and all the subtext that goes along with being ‘slow’.
I use quotes because, in my view, people who identify as detail oriented, bottom-up processors are anything but slow. In fact, processing all that information means that behind the scenes, we are very, very fast. Not that there is any inherent benefit or fault in either ‘slow’ or ‘fast’, but I am intrigued by discovering accuracy rather than labouring under an overarching description that obscures the detail and therefore, the truth.
My aim in my work is to be with you wholeheartedly, too. I am deeply fascinated by your experiences and value your perspectives as meaningful insights.
A potted history of my work experience: 2009: I graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychosocial Science from UEA. I worked as an Outreach Support Worker with clients with severe and enduring mental health challenges. In 2011 I went back to uni to study for a full time 2 year MA in Social Work (UEA) and I graduated in 2013. I had a break as I was burned out from the degree and trained as an energy healer. I went back into front-line mental health support from 2015-2018 and also began working as a Mental Health and Neurodivergence Specialist Mentor with disabled university students from 2017-present. I now also run my own business part-time, supporting disabled students in preparing for uni and in their transition out of uni. I am registered with Social Work England and I have an enhanced DBS.
If you’d like to have your post-identification session with me, I’d love to meet you! Our session will take place on Google Meet for an hour. Please do feel free to bring your stim toys or plushies or other non-human companions for company.
